Interview: "I don't idealize solidarity."
Matthias Pfeffer initiates a discussion with Barbara Prainsack on the concept of solidarity, focusing on its relevance in the era of digitalization and artificial intelligence. Prainsack reflects on Émile Durkheim’s distinction between mechanical and organic solidarity, highlighting how societal shifts impact individual relationships. She emphasizes the evolving nature of solidarity in contemporary, highly differentiated societies, where interdependence shapes collective support systems. Prainsack also addresses the role of digital technologies, acknowledging their potential to modify rather than revolutionize solidarity practices. However, she underscores the challenge of commercial dominance in digital spaces, advocating for the creation of public digital forums to counter profit-driven content management.
