Our thoughts on the public broadcast reform in Germany
On September 26, a draft state treaty for the reform of public broadcasting in Germany was released for consultation. This important reform aims to modernize the system and better serve society.
We’ve submitted our recommendations, driven by our vision of a democratic public sphere in Europe. A key point in our proposal is enhancing the mandate of public broadcasters in Germany and ARTE to promote a stronger European perspective. If 3sat, a broadcaster spanning three countries, merges into ARTE as a two-country channel, European content risks being diluted.
With the rapid pace of digitization, it’s vital to expand the mandate of German broadcasters to include contributions to European platforms, supporting freedom of expression and diversity of opinion across the continent.
